The White Winter Expedition

The White Winter Expedition is a 7-night, 8-day expedition that begins in Chandigarh. We trust you’ll be able to make your way to Chandigarh which is easily connected to many cities by multiple means of transport. We would request you to reach Chandigarh the day before the expedition as on the first day we have a long drive to Rampur. We will pass Chail, Kufri and Narkanda on the way and can stop by at any of these places for lunch or a break.

Chail and Kufri are very popular tourist destinations for those travelling to Shimla, we will drive by these areas and can stop for a snack or a cup of tea if required before we proceed toward Narkanda. Narkanda is well known for Hatu Peak which we will cover in another itinerary. On reaching Rampur, you can see theWangtooKarcham Dam and the Sutlej River.

Day 2  Jeori, Sarahan, Sangla  night stay at Rakchham or Chhitkul.

Passing by Jeori and Sarahan, we will set out towardsChitkul, the famous last village on the Indo Tibetan border. The Kamru fort in Sanglais on our itinerary after which you can also take a stroll around the village before headingout for Chhitkul. Once you’ve had a good look around Chhitkul and a nice cup of hot tea, we will either head over to our hotel in Chhitkul or Rakchham based on the weather conditions.

Day 3 Chhitkul,Sangla, Nako night stay at Nako.

As we proceed withour journey beyondChhitkul,we will pass by RekongPeo which is the headquater for district Kinnaur and once we pass through, the terrain changes drastically. We will travel beyond the tree line and hence the dense forests will be replaced with shrub like desert plants and the landscape will become increasinglydry and rocky. We will take a 10-minute break at Khab, where you can take beautiful photos of the crystal blue Spiti river merging with the muddy Sutlej. We will then continue climbing to a beautiful village called Nako. After reachingNako and catching up on some rest, we can venture out for a stroll to the famous Nako lake and explore the village. AsNakois located in the upper Kinnaur region closer to Spiti, the village identifies with aspects of Spitian life and architecture. We will spend the night in Nako.

Day 4  Tabo monastery, Dhankher monastery night stay at Kaza.

Afterbreakfast in Nako, we will set out for Tabo, where we can have a look at the famousTabo Monastery. And then we will proceed with our journey towardsKaza viaDhankar Monastery- a 1000 years old monument in an idyllic setting. Dhankar Monastery is situated on a cliff overlooking the confluence of Spiti and Pin River. Dhankar use to be the seat of the King in ancient times and the monastery use to follow the sect of the King. The hike to Dhankar lake is a 45 minutes hike from Dhankar village and is well worth it if you are upto it. If not, you can take a walk around the village before lunch. After Dhankar, wecan visit Khungri monastery if there is timeand we will end the day in Kaza.

Day 5 Ki Monastery, Chicham Bridge, Kibber village night stay at Kaza.

Starting in Kaza, we will first visit Ki monastery, the centre of learning in Spiti valley. The monastery is set on a small hill from where you get a splendid view of the valley alongside a nice hot cup of tea. Next, we will head over to Khibber village, which used to be the highest motorable village in the world before Komic was connected by road. A short hike from Khibber village is Chichum Bridge which is the highest bridge above sea level in Asia. In the evening we will return to Kaza for the night.

Day 6  Langza,Hikkim and  Village, Tabo

After breakfast at our hotel in Kaza, we plan to take youto various high-altitude villages in Spiti Valley. We will begin the tour atLangza,which is famous for its fossils. Millions of years ago, Spiti lay submerged under the Tethys Sea. Fossils of sea life are visible in areas surrounding the village and we urge not to pick up any so as to ensure that others can also partake in this incredible experience. We will than proceed to Hikkim where the world’s highest post office is located and if there isn’t a rush, then you cansend some post cards to friends or family from here. Following Hikkim, we will head to Tabo for the night.

Day 7 Tabo to Kalpa night stay at Kalpa.

Tabo, which is known by some as theAjantas of the Himalayas has a 1000-year-old monasterythat has been active all along and the murals, wall paintings and thankasalso date back to when the monastery was first set up. The wall of the 1000 Buddhas in the main sanctum is an incredible site to see andif we have enough time, we can also take a short hike to the nearby meditation caves.We will have a look around in the morning and proceed towards Kalpa for the night.

Kalpais a beautiful village surrounded by cedar forests at an altitude of about 10,000 feet. The main crops cultivated hereare apricots & apples and if you happen to be here during harvest season, you can get a taste of the fresh Kinnauri fruits. On reachingKalpaand catching up on some rest, you explore the village, the local temple and the monastery if you are feelingupto it.

Day 8 Drop off to Shimla.

From Kalpa, we will drive to Shima and here we can drop you off at a convenient point from where you can make arrangements for transport or stay.
