Exploring Kinnaur and Spiti Expedition

The Exploring Kinnaur and Spiti Expeditionis a 6-night, 7-day expedition that begins in Shimla. We trust you’ll be able to make your way to Shimla which is connectedto many cities by multiple means of transport. We would request you to reach Chandigarh the day before the expedition as on the first day we have a long drive to Kalpa, where we will spend the night.

Kalpais a beautiful village surrounded by cedar forests at an altitude of about 10,000 feet. The main crops cultivated hereare apricots & apples and if you happen to be here during harvest season, you can get a taste of the fresh Kinnauri fruits. On reachingKalpaand catching up on some rest, you explore the village, the local temple and the monastery if you are feelingupto it.

Day 2 Kalpa, Nako lake Night Stay at Tabo.

Setting out after breakfast from Kalpa, we will drive towards Tabo. We will pass by the district headquarter RekongPeo and beyond this point you will be witness to a gradually changing landscape that transitions into a cold desert. We will take a 10-minute break at Khab, where you can take beautiful photos of the crystal blue Spiti river merging with the muddy Sutlej. We will then continue climbing to a beautiful village called Nako. After reachingNako and catching up on some rest, we can venture out for a stroll to the famous Nako lake and explore the village. AsNakois located in the upper Kinnaur region closer to Spiti, the village identifies with aspects of Spitian life and architecture. From here, we will proceed towards Tabs where we will spend the night.

Day 3  Tabo via Dhankar Monastery Night Stay at  Kaza

Tabo, which is known by some as theAjantas of the Himalayas is famous for its 1000-year-old monastery that has been active all along and the murals, wall paintings and thankasalso date back to when the monastery was first set up. The wall of the 1000 Buddhas in the main sanctum is an incredible site to see andif we have enough time, we can also take a short hike to the nearby meditation caves.We will then proceed to Dhankar Monastery.

Dhankar Monastery is situated on a cliff overlooking the confluence of Spiti and Pin River. Dhankar use to be the seat of the King in ancient times and the monastery use to follow the sect of the King. The hike to Dhankar lake is a 45 minutes hike from Dhankar village and is well worth it if you are upto it. If not, you can take a walk around the village before lunch. After Dhankar, wecan visit Khungri monastery if there is time and we will end the day in Kaza.

Day 4 Chicham Bridge, Kibber, Langza night stay at Langza.

After breakfast in Kaza, we will head over to Kibber village, which used to be the highest motorable village in the world before Komic was connected by road. A short hike from Kibber village is Chichum Bridge which is the highest bridge above sea level in Asia. We will then proceed to Langza, which is famous for its fossils. Millions of years ago, Spiti lay submerged under the Tethys Sea. Fossils of sea life are visible in areas surrounding the village and we urge not to pick up any so as to ensure that others can also partake in this incredible experience. We will spend the night in Langza.

Day 5  Langza via Komic  to Nako.  Night stay at Nako.  

After breakfast in Langza, we plan to begin the tour atKomic,which is one of the highest motorable villages in the world and the views of the snow-capped peaks are spectacular.Komic is also home to the Tangyud monastery which identifies with the Sakya sect of Buddhism. This monastery is active even in the heightof winters when temperature dips down to -30 degrees. After Komic, we will proceed to Nako where you can spend the evening exploring other aspects of village life here. We will stay the night in Nako.

Day 6 Nako to Rampur night stay at Rampur.

From Nako, we will make our way to Rampur where we will spend the night before our journey back to Shimla. At Rampur, one can also have a look at the Karchham-Wangtoo dam.

Day 7 Rampur to Shimla Drop off.

We will set out from Rampur after breakfast and provide a drop off in Shimla at a convenient spot for onward journey or stay.
