What is KLOUT?
KLOUT is a website and mobile app that uses social media analytics to rank its users according to online social influence via what they translate as being “KLOUT Score“, which is a numerical value between 1 and 100. In determining the user score, KLOUT measures the size of a user’s social media network and correlates the content created to measure how other users interact with that content.
KLOUT attempts to quantify a person or business social media influence through a variety of platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, among others. The scores run from one to 100 with 40 being average. KLOUT does not take relevance into consideration. With the average KLOUT Score being 40, it’s generally considered that KLOUT scores of 50+ are killing it in the social media arena with regard to engagement and influence. KLOUT users with a score of 63 are deemed to be in the top 5% of all social media influencers.
What Does a KLOUT Score Truly Mean?
It’s a widely known fact that an increasing number of employers and travel brands look to higher KLOUT scores as a desirable benchmark for potential employees. However, there are some perceived negatives over KLOUT and its logic of turning social influence into a quantifiable score. Our experience has been our KLOUT score will take a measurable nose dive if we are traveling off the beaten path wherein we do not have access to wifi. This despite the fact that our reputation, social reach and influence as travel writers and photographers does not decline when we are actually out in the field producing content. Yet, KLOUT, would try to suggest otherwise with it’s scoring mechanism.
Interests vs. Expertise
KLOUT also mistakes people’s interests, for their expertise. For example, KLOUT has deemed us to be experts in a few subject areas where the extent of our knowledge is we simply posted or interacted with people on Twitter about a specific subject, or destination. So there are some obvious things to keep in mind when considering one’s KLOUT score.
The Love You Take, Is Equal To The Love You Make
No matter how people may about KLOUT and their mysterious scoring metrics, we are extremely happy that The Nomadic Tribes Travel Blog is deemed to be in the top 5% of all social media influencers.
