One of Seattle’s cultural gems hands down is Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley. Offering an intimate small club atmosphere for almost three decades, this is one of those hallowed places where you can get up close to your favorite artists. Maximum seating in the club is only about 380 people, with all seats being within 50 feet of the stage.
Along, with the towering figures in the world of jazz who have performed here such as Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson, Dimitriou’s also books a myriad of performers such as British blues legend, John Mayall, Manhattan Transfer and one of our personal favorites, legendary songwriter, composer, and singer, Mr. Jimmy Webb. Mr. Webb has written numerous platinum-selling songs, including “Up, Up and Away“, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix“, “Wichita Lineman“, “The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress”, All I Know, Galveston and his magnum opus MacArthur Park.
We had the opportunity to briefly meet Jimmy Webb, following his performance at Bellingham’s Mount Baker Theater the previous year. Jett was totally gob smacked having been hooked on Mr. Webb’s songwriting prowess from when he was a pre-teen living in Ottawa. On cold winter mornings, Jett used to start the family car to warm it up before leaving for school. Always a music lover, he would turn on the radio and listen to Wichita Lineman play, which was in heavy rotation on the airwaves at the time.
If it could be said there is such a thing as a songwriting super hero, then Mr. Webb has always been that for Jett. In person, Jimmy truly comes across as being a kind, warm-hearted and gracious man. After he autographed his book, “Tunesmith: Inside the Art of Songwriting” (Yes, Jett had brought his copy of the book to the show), Jett asked Jimmy if he would be so kind as to pose for a picture? “Of course!” Jimmy said, and swung his arm around Jett as if we were old friends.
Sorry, but we’ve digressed. If you ever find yourself in Seattle and are seeking a night out, we recommend you check out Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley’s website to see who is performing. A great venue with some big name artists.
